Located deep in Carmel Valley in rural Cachagua, the studio over-looks the Carmel River and the Ventana Wilderness of Los Padres National Forest.
The studio is an apartment with another apartment next door.
WE ARE NOT IN BIG SUR!
This is a remote setting: We are 60 minutes inland from Carmel/Monterey and and two hours away from Big Sur.
We are located deep in Carmel Valley on a very windy, narrow and steep country road--some call it harrowing but worth the drive. The property has a small cluster of mountain cabins built in the 1920s as a summer retreat for a Carmel Highlands family. Nestled under old oaks, the studio apartment is tucked at the back of the main cabin, an overlooks the Carmel River. The main cabin, built in 1929, has two other apartments, all of which have their own entrances. The studio shares one wall with the one bedroom apartment.
Included in the studio is a kitchenette stocked with basic utensils for cooking and baking, allowing you to stay in and enjoy the peace and quiet of a retreat atmosphere. There is a small apartment sized refrigerator located next to the kitchen in the bathroom. The kitchen is stocked with basic breakfast items (coffee, teas, half and half, sugar, oatmeal), cooking supplies (olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper) and a bottle of local wine.
There is one full-size bed and a futon chair that makes into a twin bed.
The bathroom has a full-size claw foot bathtub, perfect for steamy relaxation.
The deck over looks the Carmel River, which runs year-round.
CHILDREN: The property is not suited for young children.
PETS: Dogs are allowed on a case by case basis. No cats and no puppies! Dogs must be over a year old, well behaved, up to date with shots, and have their own bedding and towels (no muddy paws on the white towels, please).
**Summertime notes: First, it's usually fairly hot here--you can swim in either the river or in our river-water filled swimming pool. Second, It would be good to bring Off! or equivalent bug spray for mosquitoes and gnats. Last, if you plan on doing any hiking make certain you bring Technu for poison oak. **
Take a five minute stroll to the Lower Meadow which is covered by a solid canopy of trees and bordered by the river. There is an outdoor kitchen under construction, a bocci ball court and access to the river. The Lower Meadow is also available for group camp-outs or small group events, if you are interested.

The Studio apartment is part of a complex of old summer cabins. The Studio is in the main cabin and shares a wall with the 1929 Charles Greene Cabin Apartment. There is a separate cabin along the cliff next to the studio.
The grounds are not pristine in any sense of the word! We do our best, but we have finite time--this is a lot of land with 100 year old buildings; we are busy making sure things are working properly.
If you are looking for maintained lawns and gardens or a park-like surrounding, then this is most definitely not the place for you.
OUT IN THE BOONDOCKS: This property is in a rural setting, with wild animals, an unpredictable river and, well, nature. Please conduct yourselves wisely. There are no lifeguards, and no camp rangers.
PET DOGS are allowed on a case by case basis. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please ask.
QUIET SPACE: Other people live in the neighboring cabins, and all enjoy a quiet, peaceful environment. The loudest thing around should be the river, and an occasional dog barking. Please keep voices and music at a reasonable level while near the cabins. And please, keep very quiet on Saturday and Sunday mornings until noon!
The Lower Meadow is the place to go if you need to cut loose with loud music or conversation.
HOST EXPECTATIONS: We do our very best to provide a comfortable and relaxing respite for our guests. Enjoy the space and please leave it as you found it.
--Please wash dishes and pick up.
--If anything was accidentally broken or overly soiled, please do not hide it or throw away--we need to know these things so they can be replaced or receive any extra attention needed.
CHECK OUT TIME IS NOON! Late check outs make housekeeping scheduling very difficult. More times than not there are new guests arriving the same day; we need all the between time to make everything perfect for them.
NO FRIED OR BAKED FISH! The studio is a very small space--the smell sticks to everything. It is quite awful!
We're only there if guests need us, otherwise guests are left alone to enjoy the peace and solitude.
Born and raised in the shadow of the Angeles Crest in Southern California, I've lived on the Monterey Peninsula for the past 20 years. I love living in rural Cachagua surounded by majestic oaks and bay laurals, the sound of the river, and where only clouds can cover the stars at night.
I'm an artist at heart and by training: drawing, painting, graphic design, and dance. In my spare time I enjoy the company of friends, a glass of local wine, and a good game of dominos.
