“Byzantine history buffs will be overwhelmed by the vast collection, focusing on the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods from the 3rd to the 21st Centuries AD. The Byzantine Museum houses more than 25,000 objects from several former provinces of Byzantium including Serbia, Bulgaria, Thessaloniki, Mystras and Crete. Located near the upmarket area of Kolonaki, the main museum building resembles a Tuscan villa set in a beautiful enclosed courtyard away from the busy main road of Vasilissis Sofias. It’s a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and you can easily picture yourself sitting in the nearby coffee shop with a good book. The building was built in 1948 in the Tuscan Renaissance style and is an architectural rarity in Athens.”

“The Acropolis of Athens in the age of Pericles! The Acropolis, with its towering buttress walls that project dramatically skyward in central Athens, has been a focus of human attention for more than three millennia. Our contributing archaeologist John Leonard explores how the Acropolis, as we know it today, came to be, under the leadership of the influential, democratically-minded statesman, Pericles.”

Hill
“The word acropolis literally means in Greek "upper city," and though associated primarily with the Greek cities Athens, Argos (with Larissa), Thebes (with Cadmea), and Corinth (with its Acrocorinth), may be applied generically to all such citadels, including Rome, Jerusalem, Celtic Bratislava, many in Asia Minor, or even Castle Rock in Edinburgh. An example in Ireland is the Rock of Cashel. Acropolis is also the term used by archaeologists and historians for the urban Castro culture settlements located in Northwestern Iberian hilltops. The most famous example is the Acropolis of Athens, which, by reason of its historical associations and the several famous buildings erected upon it (most notably the Parthenon), is known without qualification as the Acropolis. Acropolis of Athens achieved its form in the fifth century BC and is currently an archeological site.Although originating in the mainland of Greece, use of the acropolis model quickly spread to Greek colonies such as the Dorian Lato on Crete during the Archaic Period.”

“The green hill behind the Panathenaic Stadium whose foothills were crossed by the river Ilissus took its name from Ardettus, an ancient Athenian who resolved the differences between Athenians, and was the sacred site where the jurors took their oaths. There were important monuments on the hill like the Sanctuary of Tyche and the tomb of Herodes Atticus. Climbing to Ardettus with the paths among the pine trees is a rewarding experience due to the nature and the unique view to the city.”

“This beautiful pedestrian street is located literally under the Acropolis and it is no accident that it is one of the most expensive streets of the capital. At the pedestrian street of Dionysiou Aeropagitou we encounter exceptional examples of ancient and modern architecture. The pedestrian zone, embracing the rock of the Acropolis, ends at the pedestrian street of Apostolou Pavlou, in Thissio. Here, the beautiful neoclassical and the lines of the old tram fade out at the paved street, creating a nostalgic atmosphere of old Athens to the neighborhood that is loves by the Athenians of every age, but also the visitors of the city.”

“Greece is known for having the most beautiful beaches in the world and the most quaint villages in Europe, and now the country can add the Athens suburb of Kerameikos — one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world — to the list. Forbes has announced that the hip, trendy and artistic neighborhood is the place to be if you are looking for cool things to do. The vibrant neighborhood has murals painted on walls, new exciting restaurants with fusion concepts and is the trendiest place in Athens to have a drink with friends. The hippie-like atmosphere of the neighborhood has caught on and even tourists check it out and hang out with the local crowds. There are up-and-coming artists who display their work at galleries, theatres, bars, and there is something do around every corner. Kerameikos is just a 10 minute walk from the historic center of Athens, and as Forbes puts it: “the laidback Kerameikos neighborhood seems to live in a magical world of its own.” “It’s a place where old and new, Greece’s storied past and often turbulent present, tradition and forward-looking creativity all coexist happily together. At the weekly street market, the neighborhood comes alive in a riot of sights, smells and flavors. In recent years Kerameikos’s low rents and old-time feel have lured creative young Athenians to the area, where they have opened inventive restaurants, bars and cafés along with galleries and theaters. Joining Kerameikos’s rich trove of existing old-school establishments, these new spots have helped create one of the Athens’ most exciting dining and cultural scenes.” ”

“Philopappos Hill is situated north-west of the Acropolis. The hill was named after Philopappos, a Roman consul who loved Athens and grandson of Syrian king Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The actual mausoleum of Philopappos was discovered during excavations by archaeologist Konstantinos Travlos. Only one wall of the Mausoleum remains today, showing relief scenes from Philopappos’ life and an inscription”
