The arrangements for the animals are great (check out the new penguin area!). The zoo makes for a great day, with a really nice playground and park just outside as well.

Musicians from Seattle and around the world play in the heart of Ballard. Many roots/alt-country/americana artists, but just as likely to have a brass band from New Orleans or a punk band from Mexico!

This bookstore was opened by a Jeopardy winner, who used his winnings to follow his dream of opening a bookstore. You will find a recommended book that you've never heard of, and you'll be thrilled that you did. My favorite bookstore in Seattle!

Essentials

This grocery store is a local one, has a good selection of organic produce and they have great employee benefits that mean a lot of folks have been there for a long time and are really invested in providing really good customer service. Stock up on supplies here, but watch out for Sunday evenings, when everyone else is doing the same.

This is the best New York wood-fired pizza on the west coast. The food is delectable, the service friendly and knowledgeable. The wait can be really long, so get there either at 4:45 pm or on the later side. You can also get a cocktail and delicious apps at Essex next door to see you through.

The baked eggs make me sing. The owners met in pastry school in Paris (enjoy the cakes while waiting for delicious baked eggs or divine benedicts). They are busy on weekends so expect a wait, but it is worth it!

The market runs year round, which gives you a sense of how vital an institution it is. The focus is food, not crafts. Produce, eggs, meat, cheese, all sorts of potable items, and buskers whose music and other performances make The Ballard Farmer's Market a sunday morning treasure. Walk down from the house with a few bags and you will avoid parking hassles. And go with an appetite, because there are incredible delights to be had. We have spent many happy Sundays having crepes and watching the little kids dance to The Tall Boys.

I know, 15th Ave is a big road, sounds unappetizing to go to a sandwich stand next to all that traffic... but GO GET A CUBAN! Their sandwiches are bliss on bread. You can call ahead so that you don't have to stand around and wait.

Arts & Culture

This museum is an old school Ballard gem (literally--it's in an old elementary school building). Ballard was a fishing and shipping town originally, with many Swedes and Norwegians. We have the largest Syttende Mai celebration outside of Norway. The Nordic museum gives you great insight into both the local history and contemporary Nordic arts and crafts. Plus there is a great playground right next to it!

Sightseeing

This is just a really cool place. You can check out the fish making their way up to spawn or coming back out to the ocean, depending on the season. The engineering feat is impressive, the gardens a delight. Great for bird watching (kingfishers, eagles, hawks--there is even a heron rookery right on the Magnolia side).

Drinks & Nightlife

Perfect! Next door to Delancey, the food here is great in its own right. The wings and burger are high-end takes on the classics, with the latter being cooked in the wood-fired oven. The cocktails are delightful. Go there on a Tuesday for Tiki and Taco night and you will have a heavenly taco experience.
