Beach and walks

The house is less than 5 minutes walk to the golf course, 2 beaches and the coast path. Portwrinkle The little fishing village of Portwrinkle is tucked away in Cornwall's forgotten corner. Once the scene of a thriving pilchard industry the old fish cellars are now holiday cottages and the quaint little harbour is now a place of calm.

There are two beaches immediately accessible from Portwrinkle; to the west of the harbour is the sandy crescent of Hoodny Cove and to the east the quirkily named Finnygook Beach. There is actually a reasonable patch of sand within the little harbour at Portwrinkle too. Small carpark so get there early for space.

Finnygook is the most popular of the two beaches and comprises of a stretch of fine golden sand which runs down to the mid tide mark. At this point there is a rocky ledge which runs most of the length of the beach. This is home to a host of rockpools which are great for the kids to explore. As the tide comes in it becomes a good spot to snorkel.

Hoodny Cove is a little more sheltered than Finnygook, tucked away under high green cliffs. The beach here has the same sand and rocky foreshore as at Finygook, but a very different feel overall. Whereas Finygook backs onto the road and car park, Hoodny has a tucked away somewhat secluded feel to it. Short drives away are: Whitsand bay Located between Rame Head and Portwrinkle this is possibly one of the best beaches in this part of Cornwall. Whitsand Bay consists of a stretch of sand approaching 4 miles in length towards low tide where several smaller coves join up. Not easy access so forget prams – but paths readymade steep going up but well worth it. The most popular beaches for locals. Access to the beach is steep paths owing to the steep, high cliff paths from car parks at either end. The easiest access is from the car park near Tregantle Fort leading to Long Sands beach. Whilst the fort is a remnant of coastal defences from the Napoleonic era the area is still in use by the military. When the Tregantle Fort firing is operating red flags are flown and access is strictly prohibited. The other car park is located near Sharrow Point and leads down to Freathy and Tregonhawke Beach.
Whitsand Bay has a reputation for strong rip currents which makes swimming here potentially treacherous. There is seasonal lifeguard cover, but caution is advised. Easy parking at Seaton beach pictured which has a river running through it with a nice walk through a woodland park and a cafe on the beach. Very pretty and not difficult section of coast path.Head east to mount edgecombe and ferry to Plymouth or West to Downderry and on to pretty port of Looe.
