This is the place for your morning coffee. Everything about the business is thoughtful, from responsible sourcing to in-house roasting to sustainability efforts—and in this case, you can actually taste the difference. Grab a cuppa then perch at one of the outdoor tables, perfect for catching that early morning breeze.

I’m a sucker for this little cafe—it’s my go-to brunch spot the day after a show at Pappy & Harriet’s. Like pretty much everything else on this list, it’s just two minutes down the street in town. You’ll find hearty options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (but like I said, breakfast is my fave). There’s something for everyone on the menu—lookin’ at you, my plant-based friends.

This is the spot for a fresh, quick breakfast or lunch. If you’re on the verge of hangry, and Crossroads (which is just a couple buildings over) has a wait, hit up this cafe for a filling, healthful meal with great vegan and veg options. I’ll grab a to-go lunch from here, and maybe a slice of pie if I’m feeling saucy, to pack in to the National Park and enjoy after some miles on the trails.

Owner and baker extraordinaire Marylee “Boo” has modified her family recipes to bring cakes and pies (whole and by the slice), all kinds of cookies, granola bars, breads, pot pies, and quiche to all. Her menu of sweet and savory baked goods, many of which are vegan or gluten-free, changes daily based on seasonality. Weekends bring an early morning rush, so don’t go crying to Boo if she’s sold out of coffee cake because you slept in.

A solid option for a low-maintenance meal, this place makes killer pizzas and calzones and salads—you really can’t go wrong. Just don’t leave without snagging some garlic or honey-cinnamon knots. If you’re planning to dine in, keep in mind that dinner can bring a light rush. They also sell pizzas by the slice and have vegan and gluten-free options.

Dear, sweet JT Saloon, how I love thee. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year, this mainstay is pretty much your only option for nightlife in Joshua Tree proper. But it performs.

If you know, you know. If you don’t know, head on out to Pioneertown to explore where Hollywood shot its Westerns during the Golden Age of film. A relic from that time, this restaurant/bar/music venue/campground gets an A+ for atmosphere and food. Head that way before sunset (it’s about a 20-minute drive) so you can poke around the old movie set adjacent to the restaurant, and call ahead for a reservation—wait times can be up to an hour (or more) otherwise.

This hidden gem of a restaurant might be a bit off the beaten path (about 20 minutes away in Flamingo Heights—the drive is beautiful), but it’s far from a well-kept secret: The New York Times and Vogue have lauded the founding couple’s vision and its execution, and locals and visitors alike cottoned on quick. It’s first come, first serve, open Thursday through Monday, so get there early or face scribbling your name onto the list near the door if there’s a wait.

Sightseeing

The West Entrance is less than 10 minutes from The Pinto. When entering the park, you pay per car rather than per person, so don’t take multiple vehicles unless you have to. The pass ($30/ car, $25/motorcycle) is good for one week, so hold onto it and take advantage of exploring at different times of day (and during multiple sunsets). Dogs are welcome! So long as they're on a 6-foot-max leash and you don't stray more than 100 feet from any road. When entering the park, ask the ranger to point out the dirt roads, which are basically wide trails you can hike with your pup. It gets majorly hot out there though, so bring more water (and snacks) than you think you'll need. For details on trails, hiking, rock climbing, picnic spots, and more, visit nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/hiking.htm

Built in 1954 on what’s believed to be a powerful geomagnetic vortex in Landers, the Integratron is a beautiful mash-up of architecture, art, and the other-worldly. George Van Tassel, who created the dome-shaped wooden structure, had a unique connection to the cosmos and designed the building with the goal of using it as an electrostatic generator for time travel. Today, you can check out the remarkable space during a 60-minute sound bath (check site for pricing and availability).

Free and open to the public 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset, this outdoor sculpture museum showcases artist Noah Purifoy’s large-scale works, constructed entirely from junk materials. If you’ve got a sweet ride that doesn’t do well on mild dirt roads, consider saving this stop (about 10 minutes from the house) for a future trip.
