Hidden treasures in a business city
THE MARVELS OF MILAN
Back in 1288, milanese scholar and friar Bonvesin de La Riva wrote The Marvels of Milan, a book citing one by one all the thriving shops and productive activities.
It seems Milan's has been labelled as a 'business only' centre since the dawn of times.
Milan rarely considered a touristic destination. Travellers pass by on business, for plane or train connections, to shop, for the Fashion Week or the Design Week, but Milan is an old business centre, an old city, and like any old lady, it has its little jewels and stories to tell.
With this little guide I want to tip them out to my visitors.
Everybody knows where La Gioconda is: Paris, Louvre. Fewer people knows where Leonardo’s fresco, The Last Supper, is in Milan. The masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci, located in Santa Maria delle Grazie church, has been closed to visitors for a very long time. When Milan was bombed by the allies after Nazi’s occupation, it was somehow a good rumor for Milanese people that the fresco was still standing. A good sign. After the war restaurations works begun but the result didn’t satisfied the art world and for the rest of the century well into the 2000, one of the most famous scene in the world has been considered ruined or simply lost.

Situated in Piazza dei Mercanti (Merchant’s square), just in front of Piazza Duomo, the Palazzo della Ragione was one of Milan’s business centers (or “broletto”) from the XII century. On one of the entrance’s arches sides there’s The Scrofa Mezzalanuta (half-wollen boar) an acient emblem of Milan, connected to the ethymology of the city’s name and its misterious celtic’s origins.
No tickets needed. Just a nice walk :)

Connecting Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala, the Galleria, wanted by the new italian king Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia and the citizien who asked for a neo-rinascimental “city gallery” like London and Paris, designed by the unfortunate architect Giuseppe Mengoni (he will die falling down in the same gallery), a walk through the Galleria must not be missed. A Milan’s lucky charm is to get to mosaic of the bull (symbolizing the city of Turin) and turn on his testicles three times standing on one’s heel. Did the milanese, after struggling against the Austrian Empire, after fighting for a Republic and settled for the Sabaudian Monarchy disliked the Turin’s King that much?
Apparently so :)
From my place: just follow the direction to the Duomo.
