Great if you like to do a bit of nature sight seeing from the river. You re able to rent kayak and kano after reservation (except on mondays)

Historic place
Fort Liefkenshoek is one of the oldest fortresses in Flanders. The military building from the end of the 16th century was built to protect the city and port of Antwerp against the advancing Spanish troops led by Farnese. Together with Fort Lillo - on the other side of the Scheldt - it was of great importance for control over shipping: together they could close off the Scheldt. Over the years, the Spanish, Dutch, French and Austrians laid siege to both forts that formed part of the Staats-Spanish Lines, a military defense network from the Eighty Years' War to the French era. The fort was used as an occupier several times: it served as a quarantine station, as a naval base, as a holiday resort for the professional soldiers, ... The oldest buildings date from the Napoleonic period (1810-1811)

Almost completely abandoned town. Belgian government pressured citizens to abandon houses creating a ghost town. Objective was to destroy the village for expansion of the harbour. Recently it s been determined it was not necessary.
