Sightseeing

Papakolea Green Sand beach is a must see for the adventurous traveler. To access the beach, there is a 5.5-mile round-trip hike. It is not a difficult hike; however, the terrain is uneven, with an elevation decrease on the way in of 275 feet. Be sure to bring food, water, and sunscreen as there are no amenities at the bottom. There are sometimes local guides at the entrance who will charge approximately $20 round trip to drive you to the beach but be sure to arrange a pickup time with the driver. Be aware that there is no lifeguard on duty at this beach and the surf is quite strong on the south shore. Swimming is not recommended.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is a unique experience. Access to the beach is easy with a quick walk from the parking area. Parking is very limited, so your patience is needed! Whether you're exploring the tidepools, taking a quick dip with the sea turtles, or sunbathing on the hot black sand, this is a great place to experience the natural beauty of the Big Island.

Tuk-Tuk Thai Food Truck is a local favorite. Due to their popularity, be aware that they oftentimes sell out of some of their more popular dishes close to dinnertime. I recommend calling in your order ahead of time to avoid a long wait. The food here is worth the effort!

Hilo Farmers Market is a great place to patron local vendors. There are many farm stands that have the freshest fruits and vegetables at great prices. Some of my favorites to pick up for kitchen are papaya, pineapple (white pineapple is a rare find, so if you find it, try it!), and rambutan. There are also vendors that sell craft and gift items.
