Food scene

Ewings is one of our favorite restaurants in Kernville! About a 20 - 25 minute drive from the cabin. This restaurant sits above the river and has spectacular views and exceptional food.

Like craft beer and good atmosphere? Kern River Brewing Co. is a must-visit brewery, home to some of the best craft beer in the Sierras. They also have good food too….we like the pulled-pork tacos the best. Ask if they have “Citra” on tap!! They only make it a few times a year, but it’s one of the best IPA’s in California!

This awesome little bar and grill is within walking distance from our cabin. It’s usually only open on the weekends, but if you’re staying Friday - Sunday, definitely check it out! It’s dog friendly and the staff is super friendly.

Sightseeing

Rafting, fishing, swimming, camping….this is our favorite spot to hang out and do outdoor activities! If you follow up the Mountain 99 from Kernville, you will travel alongside the river and see spectacular views, from vast mountains and valleys to waterfalls, to thick forest. You can pull over virtually anywhere and use the river, but be warned….the current is strong and unforgiving. Make sure you pick a nice calm spot to swim and watch your children and pets! Fishing licenses required to fish (can be bought at most stores in Kernville) and floatation devices recommended!! There are also tons of 4x4 off-roading and hiking trails that go up into the mountains around the river. One in particular follows Salmon Creek and leads to a beautiful waterfall known locally as “Valhalla Falls”. It’s kind of a hidden gem, so please keep it quiet and do not trash it!! If you’d like to hike to the falls, we can give you directions and recommendations. BLM land is plentiful near Kern river, so if you like shooting, there are many areas. We know a spot in particular, please inquire for directions….either way, it’s wise to ask the Ranger Station in Kernville for a map of BLM land and hiking trails.

This park is practically in the backyard of the cabin, you can literally walk to it from the path visible from our back door. If you take that path, you can get to the park or camp Yennis (a summertime campground) or if you take the 155 a little bit past the park, you run into a road called Rancheria Rd. Take that dirt road and you’ll find a bunch of off-roading/atv/hiking trails in all directions with awesome views. You may even run into some cows on the trail! This road may only be seasonal, so it’s best to try it during or around the summer months. Unfortunately this area was burned pretty bad a few years ago by reckless people, please make sure if you use this area to 1.) be safe 2.) pick up your trash and 3.) don’t do ANYTHING that might start a fire.
