Batemans Bay is a mix of seaside village and cosmopolitan town, Batemans Bay has an easy and relaxed charm. It is 20 minute drive North and is surrounded by forests and waterways, the town unfolds along the banks of the Clyde River, forming a gateway to the Eurobodalla region beyond. Few places offer as many unspoilt landscapes so close to a town centre. The Clyde is one of the cleanest estuaries on Australia’s east coast. A short walk from the town’s cafe strip and across the bridge will have you on its sandy northern beaches - ideal for swimming, fishing or picnicking. National parks and marine sanctuaries, secluded headlands and rock pools, sandy creeks and riverbanks, and bay and ocean beaches are all within minutes of the town centre. (These are easily found, mostly by following your instincts.) To the north of the town, the beaches at Surfside, Long Beach and Maloneys Beach offer protected waters ideal for families, relaxed walks, and picnics with local Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Cullendulla Creek, a hidden marine sanctuary flanked by a raised mangrove boardwalk, is particularly striking - with crystal clear swimming and expansive sand flats to lose yourself in.

Mogo has a charm that is hard to define. The former gold rush village has developed that certain something – an authentic but quirky mix of history, art, food, shopping and outdoor adventure. It’s worth exploring the entirety of both sides of the main street to ensure you don’t miss any hidden treasures. Shops, galleries and eateries now fill the old miners’ cottages and stores to both ends of the village. More recently, Mogo’s side and back streets have attracted a new wave of artisans and businesses, reinfusing an already eclectic blend. Creativity thrives in Mogo, and the result is both surprising and fun. A few hours exploring often produces something unexpected and unique to take home. In a town known for its quirkiness, finding one of Australia's best zoos here makes perfect sense. Mogo Zoo is much awarded and truly superb. Owned by a passionate animal advocate, the zoo and its collection of amazing and varied animals unfolds across acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. Mogo Zoo has an intimacy and atmosphere not found at larger zoos, and invites you to linger and spend more time with each animal. Like all of Eurobodalla, Mogo offers superb outdoor activities. Just north are the Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens. These gardens abound with native flora and fauna, with a focus on plants native to the south coast.

The country heart of Eurobodalla, Moruya has charm and secrets to share with those ready to explore. The coastal drive from Broulee is stunning, with the road running alongside the Moruya River, before opening to reveal a wide flood plain tracking down from the Deua Mountains. It’s along this road that the first of the town’s secrets are revealed. Historic Quarry Park on the river’s edge tells the story of how Moruya provided stone for many of Sydney’s landmarks, including the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The tales of quarrying and loading granite onto barges for the sometimes perilous ocean journey are largely unknown, and are why Moruya is affectionately called Granite Town by many locals. Crossing the river into Moruya on a Saturday morning or Tuesday afternoon, it’s hard to miss the colour and movement spilling from Riverside Park, with two of the south coast’s best markets to explore. The Saturday market is a great way to ease into the weekend, with fresh food, music, produce and bespoke art and craft. Choose your own pace. Shop and chat with local artists, makers and growers, who are happy to share what they know, or find a place on the river’s edge to sit, eat and watch. The parade of people, dogs and fashion is as hip as it is eclectic. The Sage farmers market on Tuesday afternoons is one of Australia’s best. It was twice awarded most outstanding farmers market by ABC’s Delicious magazine, not only for the authenticity and quality of produce, but for the atmosphere of the market, which sees the ringing of a bell at 3pm to signal the start of trading. Plot your course in advance, as polite pandemonium follows. If you miss the markets don’t worry. The rich agricultural land and clean waters surrounding Moruya mean there is always something special on offer at farm gates or on local menus with an unassuming mix of cafes and award-winning restaurants. The reward continues in the landscapes surrounding the town, with ocean, mountains and forest within easy reach. The Moruya River heads are less than 8km from town. The river here is wide and clean, fringed with small sandy bays giving way to long ocean beaches to the south. Surfing, swimming, boating and fishing here are all sensational.

Sightseeing

A trip to Broulee should always include a walk around Broulee Island which can be accessed walking up North Broulee Beach or parking at South Broulee carpark and walking towards the beach to the rock platform that leads to a quiet sheltered beach and the sand-spit connecting to Broulee Island. The island holds many secrets, including the ruins of a hotel and sea port railway. Now reclaimed by native bush and birds, the walk around the island is roughly 4kms and takes you through a magnificent and dynamic coastal landscape.

After crossing the Candlagan bridge follow the creek past the playground and head up a windy track to the Mossy Point headland where you can walk around and get stunning views of the ocean and maybe even see a whale during the migration season. Continue around the headland and you will come to an anchor and the views looking over the town of Tomakin there is a stairway leading down to the Tomaga river which offers a boat ramp, kayak and paddle board hire, as well as resident giant eagle rays swimming in the shallow waters.
