Food Scene

When you step into Voss' Birchwood Lodge, time stands still. Built in the turn of the century (1908) Voss’ Birchwood Lodge is living history. Reminiscent of a bygone era, the Voss family continues to offer the same northwoods experience that attracted theater legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine to regularly stay there. The gourmet Chef Chris is a well kept secret. Try Ruthie's homemade pie for dessert. The restaurant's dining room overlooks a quiet bay of Spider Lake, one of 11 lakes on the Manitowish Waters chain of lakes. Breakfast & dinner are served. Luncheon and shops in the Chalet building, where you can walk through a well preserved 1930s era bar. Open June through September.

Just opened in June 2015. Right on the Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail, Dixie's has some of the best views in Manitowish Waters. With Vance Lake and the Manitowish River (downstream of the Rest Lake Dam) as the focal point, both the interior and exterior deck take advantage of the breathtaking landscape. The relaxing, comfortable inside invites you to sit with your drink and food while reading one of several newspapers they provide, working on your computer with their free Wi-Fi or chatting with friends. Or sit on the deck to enjoy the solitude and beauty of the Northwoods. You'll come for the coffee and stay for the view. Owned by Liz Uihlein, it is immaculately maintained and features Wisconsin's own New Roots coffee, Rishi tea, specialty baked goods, Panini made to order and a soup of the day.

Drinks & Nightlife

An outdoor bar located in the rear of Greer's Pier Marina looking out onto Spider Lake and the channel to Manitowish Lake, it's a great little "hole in the wall" place for a late afternoon/early evening cocktail at sunset.

A well kept secret 63 miles from the cottage near Mellen, WI. Ancient lava flows, deep gorges and spectacular waterfalls make Copper Falls one of Wisconsin's most scenic parks. Log buildings built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s add to the park's charm. Has several 1-2 mile easy hikes with awesome views of the falls. Also great for mountain biking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and picnicking.

Check out the John Dillinger exhibit here. There are still bullet holes in the walls and windows of the lodge (now a restaurant) where the April 23, 1934 shootout between the Dillinger Gang and the FBI occurred. Dillinger escaped along the shore of Little Star Lake. Open year round.
