Maycocks Bay is an idyllic little spot on the north-west coast of Barbados. Getting here can be quite the adventure. But if you follow the signs and ask for directions you'll find it too and be rewarded with a quiet piece of paradise. From the clifftop overlooking the bay, you'll enjoy fabulous views up and down the coastline. Whales are often spotted here in the early morning between December and April. After parking, head south on foot until you find a fairly steep track that leads down into the bay. Good footwear, rather than flip flops or sandals, is advised. Swimming is not recommended at Maycocks Bay as there are rough waves and strong currents in the area. For seabathing head over to River Bay instead. The reefs do make it a good spot for snorkelling and scuba diving. Divers will also enjoy exploring the 169 foot wreck the "Pamir" just to the south of Maycocks Bay. Although the very best surfing spot in Barbados is on the east coast, Maycocks Bay also attracts adventurous surfers along with kiteboarders and kitesurfers. The bay is named after Thomas Maycock, one-time landowner of the area. There was once a fort - Maycock's Fort - located here. Local rumour has it that there was treasure buried in or near the fort and it has never been found!

Beautiful West Coast Beach
This beach is located just north of Prospect and just south of Paynes Bay right off the main highway (Highway 1) on the west coast of the island. Fitts Village beach is pretty quiet mostly used by locals from the surrounding districts and guests who stay at the small apartments and villas located on the beachfront. The seas here are calm, as you would expect on this coast, although it’s a bit more lively in some spots and at high tide. Small reefs in the area, especially to the south, provide for interesting snorkeling. The beach is quite wide and shade is provided by trees bordering the beach. There are picnic benches in the wooded area leading onto the beach. You can pack your own lunch or pop across the road to the supermarket for drinks and snacks. Fitts Village beach is a favourite nesting spot for turtles with many hatchlings beginning their life right here. The Barbados Sea Turtle Project also releases hatchlings on this beach and encourages locals and visitors to assist in this process. Visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thebstp for dates and times of releases. Barbados is home to the second-largest Hawksbill turtle nesting population in the Caribbean. The nesting season for these turtles is May-October.

Often times it is hard to tell where one Barbados beach officially begins and another ends. Such is the case with Brighton beach and the adjoining Brandons beach. Nonetheless, both are beautiful spots to sunbathe, swim and simply relax. Brighton is the northernmost of the two beaches and can be easily accessed from the Spring Garden Highway. There is a large parking lot at Brandons - park there and then stroll north along the beach. Brighton is typically quieter than Brandons so if you enjoy being away from the hustle & bustle of a busy beach then this is the perfect spot for you. The calm, clear turquoise waters lap gently onto the shore inviting you in for a refreshing soak. There are some inshore reefs but lots of sea bathing areas with a sandy bottom. The wide soft-sand beach is lined with mature trees. As you relax at Brighton you'll likely see the colourful catamarans out to sea heading down the coast. If you are visiting Barbados by cruise ship, then Brighton is the perfect spot to spend the day as it is a short stroll from the port where cruise ships dock. At the northern end of the beach is the "Hot Pot", an inlet of hot water that is a favourite spot for many locals. However, great care should be taken bathing here as there are strong currents and undertow. Get a refreshing drink or lunch at Weisers on Brandons beach, or pack your own picnic to enjoy on the beach!

Pebbles beach is located on the south-western coast of Barbados, just south of Browne's Beach and just north of Needham's Point and within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here white sands are kissed by the gentle waves of the turquoise Caribbean sea. It's a lovely spot for sunbathing and strolling the beach. With its calm waters, Pebbles Beach is a favourite for children. Watersports Pebbles Beach overlooks Carlisle Bay, whose 6 shipwrecks make it a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling. The calm waters in this bay provide perfect conditions for stand up paddle boarding and kayaking. Sailing is another very popular activity here and you'll often see the bay dotted with sailing vessels from catamarans to luxury yachts. These are generally slightly to the north of Pebbles beach. Race Horses Pebbles Beach is also a favourite with Barbados race horses! Nearly every morning, grooms bring the horses from their nearby stables at the Garrison to bathe in these waters. It is particularly therapeutic for those recovering from injury. Cuz's Fish Stand No trip to Pebbles Beach is complete without a stop at Cuz's Fish Stand located just off the beach at the northern end. Here you'll enjoy the most delicious fish sandwiches (we call them cutters) which many people say they are the best on the island. Delicious fresh fish is nestled in a warm bread roll alongside tomato and lettuce. Add your condiments - ketchup, mayonnaise and local pepper sauce are favourites - and grab a Banks beer to wash it all down. Feeling adventurous? Try the fish cutter with cheese or egg or both!

At the southern end of Carlisle Bay, right on the south-west tip of Barbados, is the historic Needham's Point area. The Beaches With calm crystal clear waters Needham's Point is a favourite sea bathing spot for locals and visitors alike. Young children will enjoy wading in the calm waters and exploring the natural ocean pools which are teeming with marine life. Culpepper Island is a small uninhabited island located off the south-eastern coast of Barbados, near to Ragged Point. Although Culpepper Island can be reached by swimmers (especially at low tide) great care should be taken as the seas and currents in this area are quite strong. Observing from the shore or cliffs that overlook the island is much safer. The island is 220 ft x 75 ft and rises aproximately 20 ft out of the water.

Like the other stretches of beach along this coast, there are strong currents at Tent Bay and swimming in open water is not recommended. If you visit Tent Bay be sure to have lunch at The Atlantis Hotel, a landmark that has served guests for over 100 years!

This is a quiet little haven where a shallow reef breaks the waves and creates small pools perfect for soaking in. The rocky nature of the bay also makes it an ideal spot for local lobster fishermen! In fact the Bay Tavern restaurant located in Martin's Bay is renowned for its Thursday seafood lime. But you can stop by any day of the week for delicious local cuisine, enjoyed on the picnic tables overlooking the bay.

Cove Bay is situated on the North East Coast of Barbados, in the parish of St. Lucy, with Corben's Bay, the Landlock and Cuckold Point to the north, and Pico Tenerife and the Boscobelle area to the south. Cove Bay in Barbados is in a peaceful, rural setting. Although you can drive to the cliffs overlooking the bay, there are no main roads so there is no direct route to the bay. On the contrary, if you are driving to Cove Bay in Barbados you can expect to travel through fields and farmland, weaving your way through livestock such as cows, goats and black belly sheep. The landscape surrounding Cove Bay in Barbados is diverse, with gently rolling green hills merging with forested areas, muddy tracks, and coconut tree lined avenues. This is an ideal place to take a picnic that can be a unique occasion if you can position yourself overlooking Cove Bay itself. Imagine dining al fresco with friends or loved ones, the unparalleled views of turquoise seas below you accompanied by a soundtrack of mighty waves crashing into the cliffs, warm air caressing your skin, and cooling breezes to round things off. Perfect!! Please note that Gay's Cove is another name given to Cove Bay, or more specifically, to the area that nestles between Pico Tenerife, the towering column rock emerging from the sea, and the semi circular bay with its breathtaking scenery, Casuarina trees and tall swaying palms.

Archer's Bay is situated in the relatively undeveloped parish of St. Lucy on the North West coast of Barbados, with Stroud Bay and the Harrison Point Lighthouse to the south, and North Point and the Animal Flower Cave to the north. There are also some smaller bays and beaches nearby, namely Mother' Day Bay, Maycock's Bay, Hangman's Bay and Smiton's Bay. Archer's Bay in Barbados is literally at the north-west tip of the island, where towering coral and limestone cliffs almost emerge from the ocean battling for supremacy. It is a very peaceful area with few private or commercial residences, and the cliff tops offer tourists and locals some excellent walks with spectacular views. Below the majestic cliffs at Archer's Bay in Barbados, it is a different story. The narrow beach area is no match for the all year round rough sea with its exceedingly dangerous undertow and wild waves, rendering the area definitely unsuitable for swimming. Archer's Bay in Barbados is a popular spot with the locals familiar with the area but, for tourists, finding Archer's Bay is half of the appeal. First you will need to find St. Swithin's Church, and then head north until you come to a grassy park area. The Casuarina trees and panoramic sea views here provide the ideal backdrop for a picnic spot. From here, if the tide is out, you can make your way down the paths through the cool and shady green forest that surrounds the long stretch of hidden and usually deserted sandy beach at Archer's Bay.

River Bay has long been a favourite picnic spot for locals; weekends and public holidays find the area filled with families enjoying a relaxing day in this peaceful setting. During the week it’s much quieter. What to do at River Bay No trip to River Bay is complete without a short stroll to the top of the cliffs to see the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean pounding the shoreline. It’s not all that unusual to spot a whale or two out to sea! To the southern end of the bay a natural freshwater stream runs onto the beach, hence the name River Bay. Kids enjoy splashing in these waters and exploring the stream inland. Facilities Facilities at River Bay include picnic benches and washroom facilities. Be sure to bring your lunch with you as there are no restaurants at River Bay.
