Artisan Butcher Jonny Harper, now 30, opened The Meat Hook in February 2022 in the same building where he was taken on as a young apprentice by long-serving butcher Garth Steadman. The shop sources all of its meat from farmers within 10 miles of the premises keeping food miles low. The shop doesn't specialise in any particular kind of meat, however it has become known for its delicious lamb from Jonny's parents who are sheep farmers.

Sleepy Elephant occupies the ground floor of what once may have been an old 'tower house' on Sedbergh's Main Street. The name 'Sleepy Elephant' refers to a comment made by the writer A. Wainwright who wrote that the neighbouring Howgill Fells were 'often likened to a huddle of squatting elephants'. However, when the current business was set up, it was felt that 'sleepy elephant;' might be more appealing. Some years ago, when the shop was a chemist's, it was featured on the BBC Television series 'The House Detectives'. The programme's experts thought the building might go back as far as the early fifteenth century. Sleepy Elephant is now the place in Sedbergh for walking boots and other outdoor essentials. Carole Nelson, proprietor of Sleepy Elephant, spent forty years in the outdoor clothing industry, mostly 'in boots'. She worked as a representative, buyer and sales manager in various companies including Ellis Brigham and Ardblair Sports. She was also a director of Blacks Leisure. Knowing the outdoor clothing industry as she does, Carole is now able to get the best prices from suppliers – which can then be passed on to you, her customers.

Weekly Market

Markets are held every Wednesday of the year (except sometimes between Christmas and New Year and during extreme weather) on Joss Lane car park, off the Main Street of Sedbergh. The market plays an important role in the life of the town and has been established for many years. The market has stall holders who sell a range of staple produce. Most weeks you will find artisan baked bread, eggs, wet fish, fruit/vegetables (seasonal plants), local meat and sometimes other stalls as well. The Market trades from around 8.30am (and earlier) and closes around 12.30pm to 1.30pm dependent upon the season/weather and stock availability. Some parking is available on the car park while the market is in operation, although you may be better advised to park at Loftus Hill car park and walk along Main Street to reach the market.

Kirkby Lonsdale has had a Market Charter since 1227. The original market was situated at the corner of Main Street and Market Street before being relocated to the town’s elegant Georgian square, overlooked at one end by The Royal Hotel, made famous by a visit by Queen Adelaide in 1840, and at the other by the old bank. Kirkby Lonsdale’s Thursday market attracts visitors and locals alike with a good range of stalls offering everything from local produce to souvenirs, plants and jewellery.

Dog walking 1 March - 31 July

On most areas of open country and common land you must keep your dog on a short lead (no longer than 2 metres) between 1 March and 31 July - and all year round for farm animals. It’s the lambing season and fell ponies will be foaling too. Also to protect ground nesting birds. Please remember dogs can be shot by farmers if seen chasing sheep. You do not have to put your dog on a lead on public paths, as long as it is under close control.
