Sightseeing

The main square of Nea Smyrni is said to be the largest square in the Balkans. It is very lively, full of people every afternoon and all day in the weekends. Many cafes, restaurants, shops concentrated in this nice pedestrian environment, make this square attractive to many non-residents of Nea Smyrni, that come from the neighbours of all Athens for coffee, drinks or food. There are several man-made lakes/pools and fountains and the Athens Tram stops right at the top of the square. Apart from the Platia (main square) the main roads of commerce are Omirou street (Homer st.) which runs parallel to the square a block south, Eleftheriou Venizelou street, at the top of the square where the tram runs, and Paleologou street which intersects with Omirou just west of the square. All 3 of them are worth a visit if you want to walk a little.

The Parish of the Holy Church of Agia Paraskevi of Nea Smyrna was created in 1931, when the chapel of the same name was founded by the archimandrite Fr. Kirillos Dellouf, a refugee from Smyrna. He placed in the chapel two icons of Agia Paraskevi, which he rescued from the Smyrna Catastrophe. The small church is located to the left and below the Scout House, on El. Venizelos and it is the first church that operated in Nea Smyrna, "transmitted" from Smyrna, where it was operated as a "sanctuary" by its founder. Its presence goes almost unnoticed, as it is located about 70 meters above the new church, between a florist and a pharmacy, with its courtyard entrance shared between the church and the Scout Club. On January 6, 1940, the foundation stone of the new Holy Church was laid, which is dedicated to Saint Paraskevi the Martyr and the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, in order to honour both the two homonymous churches of Asia Minor. Work continued until the mid-1950s, and the inauguration of this new church took place on 4 January 1962. The church celebrates on 26 July, on the feast day of Agia Paraskevi. In this parish operates the "House of Peace" which offers many daily food portions and emergency aid to the financially ill and needy.

Panionios G.S.S. Football Club (Greek: ΠΑΕ Πανιώνιος Γ.Σ.Σ.), the Pan-Ionian Gymnastics Club of Smyrna (Πανιώνιος Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Σμύρνης, Panionios Gymnastikos Syllogos Smyrnis), more commonly known as Panionios F.C. or simply Panionios, is an amateur Greek football club based in Nea Smyrni, Athens, Greece. Part of Panionios G.S.S. (founded in 1890 in Smyrna, Ottoman Empire), Panionios F.C. is the oldest Greek football club.[1] In the wake of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–22) and the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, the multi-sport club Panionios G.S.S. was transferred to Athens. They have won two Greek Cups (in 1979 and 1998), while they were runners-up in the Greek Championship during the 1950–51 and 1970–71 seasons. They have won also the 1971 Balkans Cup[2] and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1998–99 season. The team is currently set to compete in the amateur fourth division of Greek football known as Gamma Ethniki, after failing to secure sufficient investment to continue to compete at a professional level.[3] They play their home games in Nea Smyrni Stadium with a capacity of 11,700 seats.

best bars-cafe of Nea Smyrni

Epitokio is connected with the history of its place, but even more so it is part of the life of its inhabitants. It is a landmark of Nea Smyrna with which generations of people have grown up. It is what we would call a hangout, not because it has daily patrons but because its patrons have experienced their joys, their pain, their madness in this shop. It is a classic rock-blues bar with a large bar that hosts old and new customers every night. When it opened its doors in 1987, the idea of such a bar was not very familiar to the Athens public. Although it was innovative and different, even though there weren't many shops with the same character, it quickly became a hangout thanks to its authenticity and friendly atmosphere. This continues to be the identity of EPITOKIOY today. It serves the best quality drinks at affordable prices, which shows that not only its customers love it, but it also loves and cares for its customers. But he also loves beer, so here you can enjoy a selection of 30 beer labels (including some Greek microbreweries) and 4 draught beers. The most amazing thing is that it is one of the few bars in Athens that you will find it overflowing with people every day of the week. Of course a bar could not have such a reputation if it didn't have good music. So at EPITOKIO you will hear classic rock hits. 19 Paleologou Street, Nea Smyrni, tel. 2109350232
