City/town information

Crewe, an industrial town rich in heritage, is situated in Cheshire, England and became an important railway junction during the 19th century. This is perhaps what Crewe became best known for – one of the world’s greatest railway workshops. Crewe was a place where invention and building elegant locomotives brought wealth and prestige to the town. Crewe’s name derives from an old Welsh word ‘crui’, meaning ‘weir’ or ‘crossing’. The town was created to consolidate the colony that has grown around (1840 – 1841) in the area close to the railway junction station which opened in 1837. This is when the Grand Junction Railway Company (GJR) opened its Liverpool to Birmingham line. The company then transferred its railway works to Crewe in 1843. Crewe was incorporated in 1877. Joseph Locke, the chief engineer of GJR helped lay out the town. Before this, Crewe was a small village with a population of approximately 70 residents. During these early years, the Grand Junction Railway Company controlled almost everything in Crewe, but the monopoly was broken by the passing of the Crewe Corporation Act in 1938. The London and North Western Railway was the successor to the GJR. Crewe was also the home of Crewe Works, for many years. Crewe Works was a major railway engineering facility for manufacturing and overhauling locomotives, but has since reduced in size. It has been owned by Bombardier Transportation since 2001. As for many of the towns around the United Kingdom, Crewe did not escape the effects of World War II. On the 29th of December 1940, the Rolls Royce factory was hit by two bombs. This factory, which produced Merlin engines for the Royal Air Force, made them an obvious target for enemy air raids, as well as being in the flight path to Liverpool. . However, Mr Peter Ollerhead (Author) had said “the shock of the attack was robustly countered by a typical British bulldog spirit” and "Everybody, unless they were injured, and there was quite a few injured, everybody was back at work the next day." Rolls Royce in Crewe, ceased production in 2002. This factory is now the home of Bentley Motors. Crewe is currently one of Cheshire’s largest towns with a population of a population of approximately 80 000 residents.
