Sightseeing

On a good day you can get to MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art) in Berriedale in 15 minutes. It is an amazing gallery cut into the rock of the little peninsula it is built upon. You can also catch ferry from the docks in town if you want to add to the adventure. The original land title was created when the government offered settlers all the land they could fence in a day! The peninsula was the smart choice.

The Tasman Peninsula is beautiful part of Tassie to visit, with the Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasman National Park and many other great places to see. We recommend taking a speed boat tour along the coast, it is stunning and worth every cent.

We love Maria Island. The historic buildings and the amazing wildlife and landscape make this a truly worthwhile journey. The ferry departs from Triabunna which is only an hours drive away.

If you are willing travel a little further into the heart of Tassie then we recommend heading to Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair. It is few hours drive away but the drive is beautiful, especially if you take the high road over the central plateau (via the Great Lakes).

In the neighbourhood

Bell St ends in a footpath to the Cornelian Bay park area. It has ovals, a great kids play ground, free BBQs, and the Boathouse Café. From the beach you look out at the row of old boathouses that the bay is famous for. I would not advise swimming there, Sandy Bay Beach is better for that! The old cemetery on the hill beside the park is also an interesting place for a wander and there's a nice walking track along the river that takes you past the botanical gardens and into the city.

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place for a picnic or lunch in the restaurant. The Sub-Antarctic Plant House is one of our favourite attractions in the gardens, well worth a look. It's a 30 minute walk along the foreshore or bike tracks to the gardens.

Another local destination for those who love parks, ovals, inner city bush-walks or history. The domain is a fantastic spot to see bandicoots and wallabies, especially as the sun gets low in the sky. There is a fantastic play park for kids, with free BBQs. There are several beautiful walks, one of which takes you past the Aquatic Centre and right into Salamanca.

As well as being one of our favourite nurseries, full of amazing plants, the Station Nursery has a great little café with delicious food. It's just around the corner.

Entertainment

The State Cinema is a great place to see a movie, you can even drink an alcoholic beverage or have a snack while you watch. They have small cosy cinemas (and an outdoor cinema on the roof in summer, weather permitting!)... some cinemas even have couches! It is a 6 min drive, a 30 min walk or a 10 min scoot away.

Busing, scooting and biking

The Bus Route 562 has a stop on Bellevue Parade, parallel to Bell St. Just cross the cycleway and turn left at the nursery. The Beam Scooters can travel to and from the house, the nearest scooter parking spot is outside Kmart in Risdon Rd. The cycleway runs to "the docks" area (Salamanca Market, pubs, restaurants and the MONA ferry) and only takes 15-20 minutes on a scooter or a bike.

Always take a jumper

The weather on our island is very changeable and the kunyanyi throws another level of complexity into our weather patterns here in Hobart. Don't trust a sunny morning, the weather can turn quickly so pack warm clothes for warding off the chill no matter what time of year you are visiting!

Salamanca Markets

In the heart of Hobart is Salamanca and the area known as "The Docks". There are a loads pubs, cafes and restaurants within walking distance of each other. Ferries also depart for here for MONA and other parts of Derwent Habour. On a Saturday morning the Salamanca Markets turn the area into a hive of activity and the arty-crafty, food and clothes stalls are amazing!
