Kenninji is a temple of the Zen sect, one of the main branches of Japanese Buddhism. Buddhism, founded approximately 2,500 years ago in India by Shakyamuni Buddha, teaches that the inherent suffering of life can be transcended through equanimity, wisdom, and compassion. The Zen sect, dating back to sixth-century China, seeks the realization of this ideal through a strict training system stressing work and meditation. At present, there are three branches of Zen in Japan - the Rinzai Soutou and Oubaku schools. Kenninji belongs to the Rinzai tradition. The temple was founded in 1202 by the priest Yousai (1141-1215).

According to tradition, Yasaka Shrine was built in the year 656, about 150 years before Kyoto became Japan's capital. Gion Festival, one of the three great festivals of Japan, originated in the year 869 when an epidemic spread. Sixty-six halberds were erected on the grounds of Yasaka Shrine and portable shrines were taken out and paraded to pray for an end of the disease. Utsukushi Gozen-sha Shrine, famous for its goddess of beauty, is situated in the eastern portion of the shrine compound. Geisha and maiko (geisha-in-training) come from Gion to pray to the goddess for financial prosperity, talent and beauty. Shijo-dori, the main street of Kyoto, comes to an end at beautiful Nishiro-mon Gate, a towering brightly vermilion-painted gate that is a popular place for taking pictures. Constructed with a unique feature where two structures share one roof, the main building has an endless stream of people every day praying with great dedication. Holy spring water flows in front of Utsukushi Gozen-sha Shrine. Excellent for healthy skin, visitors joyously use the water as a beauty treatment.

About Kodaiji Temple Jubuzan Kodaiji (Rinzai School Kenninji Sect) Kodai-ji Temple is located north east of Yasaka Hokanji Temple at the foot of Higashiyama Ryozen Mountains in Kyoto. It is officially called Kodaiji-jushozenji Temple. The temple was established in 1606 by Kita-no-Mandokoro (1548-1624) in memory of her late husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598). Kita-no-Mandokoro was also known as Nene. She later became a priestess and assumed the name of Kodaiin Kogetsuni. In July 1624, Sanko Osho from Kenninji Temple was welcomed as the principal monk and the temple was then named Kodai-ji. Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) (the first Tokugawa shogun) financed the construction of the temple, resulting in its magnificent appearance. Open Hours 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Gates close at 5:30 pm. Halfway up Mt. Otowa, one of the peaks in Kyoto’s Higashiyama mountain range, stands Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which is abundantly blessed with nature. It provides landscapes to match each season, including cherry blossoms in spring, lush green in summer, colored leaves in autumn, and snowscapes in winter. The mountains, which surround the temple buildings, reveal many different views from dawn till dusk and create a stunning landscape in harmony with the beautiful scenery of the ancient city. As the pure water constantly wells up, the scenery also changes its appearance every moment. Through the regular Buddhist events and special viewings, visitors can feel Kannon’s compassion and acquire an even better understanding of the deity.

Nanzen-Ji,also called Zuiryusan,is one of the most well-known Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. Emperor Kameyama loved this beautiful place so much that in 1264 he built his detached palace here. Later he became a student of the Zen Master Busshin Daimin Kokushi, and he dedicated the palace as a Zen temple in 1291. A characteristic of the history of this temple is that its abbot was always chosen as the best Rinzai Zen Master in each period. The friendly hospitality of owners Michael and their jolly bilingual staff has made The GAEL (formally Tadg's Irish Pub) the Lonely Planet's favorite Kyoto bar; relax and make friends, while enjoying great food and reputedly the best pint of Guinness in Kansai: choose from a fine selection of whiskies, bottled beers and Japanese lagers." Kyoto Visitor's Guide (read more reviews here). We changed our name on March 17, 2007 to "The Gael Irish Pub"--same great pub, same great craic! Open: 5pm-01:00am, later Thursday to Sunday Address: Yamato ohji-Shijo-Agaru Higashiyamaku-kyoto 2F Ohtoh Building

Man is shackled by preconceived ideas, set theories. In art, as in science, people's minds have blinders--established theories-- which deprive them of liberty of thought. Wishing to maintain my freedom to doubt, I have named this museum the Kahitsukan, to indicate that it and all things (Ka) might not really (hitsu) be as one is led to believe. I only hope that somehow it will make an original contribution to beauty. 9:00~18:00 A sensu is used as an accessory for kimonos. The sensu originated from a round fan called an uchiwa, which was introduced from China over a thousand years ago. The sensu was created by the Japanese who improved the uchiwa. The sensu has ribs covered with Japanese paper. The ribs are generally made of bamboo, but they are also sometimes made of sandalwood, which is a quality aromatic wood. When opened the sensu becomes fan-shaped and when it is closed it is a compact bar. In addition to that this light fan can be carried anywhere, it is also an indispensable prop used for Japanese dancing and for comic storytelling which is called rakugo. A folding fan is also called a suehiro, which means that it widens towards the end and therefore symbolizes good fortune. Folding fans generally have pictures of pine trees, bamboo, Japanese plum (ume) trees, cranes, and tortoises drawn with colors such as gold, silver, red, and white to symbolize good fortune. A folding fan, for this reason, is indispensable and is used on various auspicious occasions. Folding fans are used as props and accessories and are also presented as commemorative gifts. Moreover, folding fans are often drawn as a motif of a decoration such as a painting for auspicious occasions.
