Το Μάλεμε αποτέλεσε το σημείο προσγείωσης των Γερμανών αλεξιπτωτιστών που εισέβαλαν την Κρήτη το 1941, κατά την έναρξη της μάχης της Κρήτης (Επιχείρηση Ερμής - Operation Mercury) κατά τη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Οι αλεξιπτωτιστές κατέλαβαν το αεροδρόμιο που βρισκόταν έξω από την πόλη, γεγονός που επέτρεψε την αερομεταφορά των απαραίτητων ενισχύσεων για την κατάληψη του νησιού. Οι Γερμανοί αλεξιπτωτιστές που έχασαν τη ζωή τους κατά τη μάχη του Μάλεμε είναι θαμμένοι στο Γερμανικό Νεκροταφείο που βρίσκεται στο λόφο πάνω από το Μάλεμε (35.533779°N 23.831137°E). Έξω από το Μάλεμε, κοντά στη γέφυρα του Ταυρωνίτη, βρίσκεται επίσης το μνημείο των πεσόντων αεροπόρων της RAF που σκοτώθηκαν.
