The tallest, most prominent building on Pattaya Beach Road, Central Festival Pattaya has been extremely popular as a place to shop, eat and hang out in the city since it opened in 2009. The mall itself is comprised of 313 stores and services across seven floors, with the rest of the building being the Hilton Hotel Pattaya. Alongside the standard outlets of most Central Festival centres (including the brand’s supermarket, department store and food court) are such names as Zara, North Face and Calvin Klein. There is also a great selection of electronics stores and, further up the building, restaurants. Right at the top are a 10-screen movie theatre and 16-lane bowling alley.

With a bright red aircraft sticking out of the Second Road side and a yellow and white balloon rising out of the roof, Royal Garden Plaza is one of the most distinctive buildings in Pattaya. Inside is an impressive selection of high street stores, including Levi’s, Converse, Von Dutch and more. The Beach Road side is dotted with fast-food restaurants and there are other dining options available, making it a popular place to grab a bite before the short walk to the start of Walking Street. Attached to the side of the Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa, most of Royal Garden Plaza’s top floor is the Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not!’ Museum, making it a lot more than just a place to shop.

In stark contrast to the rest of our list of the best shopping malls in Pattaya, Mike Shopping Mall has barely a handful of designer-label stores inside. Instead, much of the floor space is given over to stalls selling beachwear, printed Tees, shoes, bags and other accessories. It is, in effect, like a giant air conditioned market. The prices are in the region of what you would expect to find at the markets, making it a great place to find cheap souvenirs. The car park on the Second Road side is often the site of a fresh fruit market while several local artists have stops in the narrow street running down the side of the building. The rooftop is home to a public swimming pool.

Outlet Mall Pattaya makes up for its lack of entertainment options with outstanding discounts, with as much as 70 per cent being slashed off the prices of designer labels. Made up of two buildings – the main indoor mall and an outdoor high street-like area behind it – the stores available include Nike, Timberland, Warner Bros Studio, Lacoste, Adidas, Levi’s, Samsonite and more. The Premium Fashion Mall in the lower level of the main building includes an open street market layout boasting many local and international labels. The dining options are very limited, but mirror the rest of the mall’s high quality and low cost.

Popularly known as “Big C North” to help people avoid confusing it with its younger cousin on Beach Road, Central Center Pattaya has the titular supermarket at its core. This is surrounded by over 130 stores and services, including a five-screen cinema, an impressive range of restaurants, an ‘IT Corner’ dedicated to electrical goods and a great choice of local and international brands of clothing, jewellery and accessories. It has an airy design, with a plant-strewn courtyard and vaulted, air-conditioned interior, making it one of the more pleasant shopping experiences in Pattaya.

Covering an area of 100,000sqm, the Four Regions Floating Market is separated into four sections – each representing and selling items from the four major parts of Thailand (north, northeast, central and south). Expect to find many eateries, fruit stalls, souvenir shops and some art galleries. There is also a cultural show every afternoon. The 350 million baht market has over 114 shops and water vendors selling authentic Thai food, desserts and specialties from all over the kingdom. For a floating market experience, hire a man-powered boat to get around and discover the richness of the surrounding Thai architecture and riverside life. Typically, the boat is big enough for four people.

The Roof Sky Bar & Restaurant Pattaya is a fun and lively place to chill out throughout the day and night. Found atop the Siam@Siam Design Hotel, it has an eclectic modern style, outstanding views across Pattaya Beach and is the home of memorable pool parties and film nights. The open-air eatery covers two levels. On the 24th floor is the main restaurant part while the pool bar is up on the 25th. Pattaya is probably best known for Walking Street – it is the bright and brash hub of the city’s nightlife. If you include all of the narrow side-roads which lead off it (and most people do), the area is home to over 80 go-go bars, the majority of the city’s nightclubs and hundreds of beer bars, as well as live music, street performances, restaurants, jewellery shops, tailors and more. Along its 1 km length, the street has a huge degree of variety, making it possible to find something for almost anyone. Prices for pretty much everything are higher here than the average for the rest of the city, with bottled beer costing around 120 baht.

Soi LK Metro is kind of like a poor man’s Walking Street, not least because everything costs less here. It is significantly shorter, being only about 200m from one end of the L-shaped alley to the other. It gets its name from the fact that it circumnavigates the LK Metropole hotel. The street itself is almost exclusively filled with go-go bars, with the few spaces between being mostly bars. The staff here tend to be less pushy, creating a more relaxed atmosphere which often suits the older visitors who don’t appreciate Walking Street’s frenetic pace. Top venues include Champagne, The Office, Sugar Sugar and Murphy’s Law Irish Bar. You will also find several good venues on the surroundings.

The area known as Pattayaland is made up of two and a half streets at the very southern end of Beach Road, just before it becomes Walking Street, and it is the home to a mix of girlie bars and gay bars (though it is mostly the latter). Soi 13/3 is called Pattayaland Soi 1 and is home to X-Boys Pattaya Show and Cupidol Bar. A narrow alley about halfway down the street connects it to Soi 13/4 – Pattayaland Soi 2 – which is home to Cats A Go-Go and The Classroom Ago-go. Finally, Boyz Town (Pattayaland Soi 3) is formed by a loop of soi from Second Road to the middle of Soi 13/4 and contains Boys Boys Boys Nightclub and Copa Show Bar. This whole section of town can be very flamboyant and fun.

Khao Kheow Country Club is a really good 27-hole layout resting on the foothills in Chonburi. The course is challenging with very extensive bunkering in and along the fairways with one bunker streaching the entire length of one of the par 4s. The greens vary from very small to extremely large and are always in excellent shape. The caddies at Khao Kheow are well trained and their advice on where to hit it and what line to putt on should be listend to for the first time golfers playing this course or the frequent golfer coming to play in Thailand. The clubhouse is excellent.

The Sanctuary of Truth is perhaps the most iconic structure in Pattaya. Intricately carved entirely from teak wood, the awe-inspiring 105-metre-tall hall on the headland to the north of Wongamat Beach is a one-of-a-kind structure in the whole world. Neither temple nor palace, despite looking like a hybrid of both, it was commissioned by a local business tycoon to act as a place of appreciation for philosophy, art, culture and faith, without being tied to a single religion.

Pattaya Viewpoint (Khao Pattaya View Point) on Pratumnak Hill is the best viewpoint in the region and the place to visit day or night to get that classic shot of Pattaya’s sweeping, crescent bay. Be warned though, this is anything but an insider’s tip so expect to share your view with an almost ceaseless conveyor-belt of package tours and the local traders who follow them touting cheap souvenirs and expensive refreshments. This might sound off-putting but the reality is tours will usually stop for 10 to 15 minutes and once they have been called back to the bus, the view point becomes quiet and peaceful – perfect for enjoying the stunning scenery.

Nong Nooch Garden is set in a 2.4sq.km. beautifully landscaped park and can easily make an all-day trip. The entire area is more like a theme park, with daily cultural shows, restaurants and accommodation as well as a vast area showcasing individually themed gardens. A leisurely stroll through the botanical park is like taking a journey around the world, through its many famous gardens, whether 17th-century French garden, Stonehenge, or European Renaissance garden.
