It's a full day out to Port Arthur. Depending on what you want to see and how much history you like to learn. Spend the day wandering around the convict sight and learn about the the life of the convicts that where sent there. Take the boat to the isle of the dead, re-fuel in one of the cafe's or restaurant and stay for the Ghost tour.

Port Arthur is about an hour drive from Carlton. Be warned there are many points of interest along the way which may delay your journey to the old convict penal settlement. It is a very scenic drive along the Arthur Highway (A9) with many wonderful experiences to be enjoyed. Popular among visitors is the Tasmanian Devil Park, but you may need to choose between that venue and the Port Arthur Historic Site as they each require most of your day.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic site has some 30 buildings, and dates back to the prisons establishment in the 1830's.
