Driving a car in Genoa can be difficult, due to the layout of the city. Thanks to the public transport network, however, a car is not necessary to explore the city's tourist attractions, and visitors are advised to park in one of the city's numerous public car parks. Genoa's historic centre is protected by a Limited Traffic Zone (Zona a Traffico Limitato, or ZTL); driving through and parking in the ZTL is prohibited for vehicles of non-residents. Outside the ZTL, parking is regulated by the so-called "Blu Area" system: areas designated by blue pavement markings serve to ensure maximum availability of parking for residents.
