On your way to the Bekaa Valley, it is essential that you stop by Domaine des Tourelles in Chtaura to learn more about their wine and their history in wine making! In the 1860’s, François Eugène Brun a French civil engineer came to Lebanon on a mission to build a railway that connects Beirut to Damascus. He settled in a town called Chtaura in the Bekaa Valley. He fell in love with the village and in 1868 opened his hotel and established his own artisinal boutique winery that later became the first commercial winery in Lebanon. In 2000, Pierre Brun died without having kids to carry on the legacy of the family. Two close families to Pierre decided to buy the winery and continue the fantastic work that Brun family started. One family was from the bekaa and the other from Becharreh ( North Lebanon). French and Spanish consultants were employed to handle the wine making since both partners did not have the required knowledge and expertise. In 2008, Fawzi Issa came back to Lebanon after studying Oenology in Montpellier and took over the wine making. Domaine des Tourelles currently produces 7 wines, 2 Araks and 2 liqueurs. The room in the pictures was Pierre's and is still kept as is. It is actually the room where they keep the bags of Anise seeds. Pierre loved sitting in this room because it helped him mediate. Anise seeds are brought from a Syrian village called Hinah. Anise is an ancient spice indigenous to the Mediterranean. The seeds have a very sweet licorice taste and contain anethol that helps in the digestion of rich foods. Arak brun is distilled 3 times and therefore is purified from methnol that is harmful and causes headaches. In Arabic, we call this Arak " Mtallat"(processed using a three-stage distillation). The Arak is then kept in clay jars for either one year or 5 years for the "Arak Brun- Special Reserve". Arak Brun has been introduced to more than 10 international markets. The UK has created cocktails using Arak to better introduce it to the new generation of drinkers. .
